Our History

The Mooresville–South Iredell Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has been a steadfast advocate for civil rights, equality, and justice since its founding in the late 1930s. Beginning with just 30 dedicated members, the branch has grown into a respected force for positive change throughout the Mooresville and South Iredell communities.

Mrs. Odessa Carr served as the branch's first president, laying the foundation for decades of courageous leadership and community service. She was succeeded by Theodore Thomas and Oates Campbell, each contributing to the branch's continued growth and impact. Today, the branch proudly serves under the leadership of Rev. Curtis E. Johnson, who continues its long tradition of advocacy and public service.

A Legacy of Leadership and Service

For generations, the Mooresville–South Iredell Branch has worked tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to advance civil rights, promote equal opportunity, and improve the quality of life for African Americans while strengthening the entire community.

Throughout its history, the branch has championed fairness, encouraged civic

engagement, and partnered with community leaders to address local

challenges.

Members have long appreciated Mooresville's willingness to move toward

greater inclusion and have celebrated the progress made through

cooperation, dialogue, and shared commitment.

During the presidency of Norris Graham, the branch achieved significant

accomplishments in recreation, housing, and other areas through united

community action. Under his leadership, the branch earned recognition as

one of the community's most effective organizations working to advance political, economic, and social equality.

The branch also honors the enduring legacy of the late Rev. John E. McKenzie, affectionately remembered as the organization's "Rock of Gibraltar." His unwavering leadership, wisdom, and vibrant spirit inspired generations of members and helped strengthen the branch during critical moments in its history.

Our Mission

The mission of the NAACP remains as vital today as it was when the organization was founded in 1909. Across every branch and unit, we are committed to:

• Eliminating racial discrimination and segregation in every area of American life.

• Protecting and expanding the right of every eligible citizen to vote.

• Seeking justice through the courts and the legal system.

• Advocating for laws that ensure equal rights and prohibit discrimination.

• Promoting equal educational, economic, and employment opportunities based on merit.

• Opposing racial violence, hate crimes, police misconduct, and all forms of injustice.

• Building stronger, more equitable communities where every person can thrive.

Looking Ahead

For more than eight decades, the Mooresville–South Iredell Branch has been a voice for those too often unheard and a champion for justice, equality, and opportunity. Our history is one of perseverance, courage, and service, but our work is not finished.

Today, we continue to build upon the legacy of those who came before us by advocating for civil rights, empowering our community, developing future leaders, and working together to create a more just and equitable society.
