Rev. Curtis Johnson, president of the Mooresville–South Iredell NAACP, challenged those gathered at the first annual Black History Month Community Showcase, held February 8, 2026, at the Citizens Center in Mooresville, to reject the lingering mindset of “we just knew our place,” a phrase echoed by many elders in the documentary of the same name. Addressing the audience, he emphasized that our community carries a rich and important history that must be told. He urged those present to recognize that within their own families are stories, experiences, and legacies that deserve to be preserved and shared for future generations.
The Mooresville–South Iredell NAACP would like to thank everyone who helped make our first Black History Month Community Showcase a success. The event was fun, educational, and spiritual, bringing together members of the community to celebrate heritage, talent, and shared history.
A special thank you goes to our guest speaker, Rev. Gavin Gabriel, whose inspiring words helped set the tone for an evening of reflection and celebration.
We are also deeply grateful to our sponsors, whose support helped make the event possible:
Iredell Physician Network, L.L.C.
Mooresville Graded School District
Pastor Will Greene and Dr. Tamikia Greene of St. Paul Church at the Lake
The evening was enriched by outstanding performances from talented individuals and groups who shared their gifts with the community:
The Willing Travelers
Dr. Bwanda D. Albert, PhD
Jiu-Jitsu Performance Academy
Trinilicious$
The Getters Steppaz
We would also like to give a special shout-out to Ms. Natalie Ramos, who served as emcee and also graced the stage as a performer, helping to make the evening both engaging and memorable.
We are also grateful to the many community members who braved the cold weather to attend this spectacular event, as well as to the officers and members of the Mooresville–South Iredell NAACP whose dedication and teamwork made the program such a success. This event would not have been possible without you. Thank you!
We look forward to hosting an even bigger and better Black History Month Community Showcase next year, as we continue celebrating our history, honoring our community, and preserving the stories that shape our future.
